The two Koreas were born in crisis

Hi guys, I move my blog from naver to blogger based on googles.
Please click http://iwanttoknowkorea.blogspot.kr/

The two Koreas were born in crisis.
Our text book starts with this sentence. I think there is no countriy which use plural form of country's name without Korea.

Korea's' . This is a tragedy and fruit of crisis.
So, I wonder where this crisis comes from?
Korean underwent Japanese colonial era and they got so many terrible things. At that time, there was one Korea and Korean tried hard to regain national sovereignty together. However, after colonial era, Korea is divided to two Koreas because of many factors. This tragedy might come from foreign pressure, difference of ideology or etc. Obviously, crisis bore the two Koreas and two koreas bore so many crisis of individual life.
I want to introduce Korean drama which showed the crisis and tragedy of koreans from two koreans.

'여명의 눈동자' Yeomyeongui Nundongja (in english : Eyes of Dawn).

This drama is based on the 10-volume novel of the same name by Kim Seong-jong(published in 1981), the story spans the years from the Japanese colonial period to World War II, Korea's liberation and the Korean War.
It aired on MBC from October 7, 1991 to February 6, 1992 for 36 episodes, and reached a peak viewership rating of 58.4%, making it the 9th highest-rated Korean drama of all time. It's amazing record in the history of K-drama.

In the uncertain atmosphere of wartorn Korea, three young men find their lives inevitably interwoven at a time when taking sides was the only option. Yeo Wook (Chae Si Ra of Emperor of the Sea) recently joined the volunteer corps, Jang Ha Rim (Park Sang Won of Sandglass) joined the anti-war movement and fell in love with a Japanese woman, and Choi Dae Chi (Choi Jae Sung of Yeon Gaesomun) is a Korean student soldier enlisted in the Japanese Imperial army. Their destinies meet in the most tumultuous period in modern Korean history, from the ideological war of the mid-40s to the bloody battles leading to the Korea War.

This drama also draw life of the Japanese army´s comfort women, actually it was the military sexual slavery. After heroin suffered bad things, she attemped suicide.

Have you ever heard about Unit 731?

Unit 731 (Japanese: 731部隊 Hepburn: Nana-san-ichi Butai?) was a covert biological and chemical warfare research and development unit of the Imperial Japanese Army that undertook lethal human experimentation during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945) of World War II. It was responsible for some of the most notorious war crimes carried out by Japan.

Because of lack of food during the world war, snake was the food for lifehood.

These were indelible histories.

After experiencing Japanese colonial era, Korea met liberation everyone dream of.

However, Korea was dividied to two Koreans.
3 years later, the Korean war happened and then another tragedy restarted.

three friends conterposed because of the difference of ideology, during the war, two friends were killed. Drama said they had no choice but to do. They were just born in crisis.

And then this drama ended here. It is worth to watch it. I know that The Eye of Dawn is  available on DVD with English subtitles. Maybe you could ask for the librarian.

As time goes by, South Korea have experienced many kinds of crisises and also overcome these crisises. However, the tragedy is not overcome at all.
Honestly, I don't have any idea of unification of two Koreas, but I hope to solve the individual tragedy of separated families.

Thank you for reading my blog.

This is the comparison table of the birth rate.
High ranking countries usually undeveloped countries. South Korea record 226th. Korean have average 1.3 babies per one couple.
And we have to focus on some developed countries who are keeping the high birth rate. These high ranking countries also had experienced some problems of low birth rate. However they did their best to promote a child birth.

These days, Korea has tried to give various merits to the multichild family. And it varies in different localities. So I will focus on Ulsan-si Ulju-gun's policy

There are a lot of policies for mom and child.

And especially, government strongly support multichild family who has more than 3 children.

Most of you know that Samdongyi, triplets of korean talents. And they receive many people's love.
So many people think that they want to have sweet twins or triplets like Samdongyi.

Let's see the policy for triplets.

Special housing supply with two or more family
Long-term loans, home buying a house with two or more support
Birth state pension credit
Child tax credit

Like this, there are many kinds of policy for family.
However, in order to get the merits, there are red-tape formalities. And most families claim that it is not enough compared to the expenses of infant care.
So some experts evaluate the birth encourage policy of Korea has a long way to go.

Therefore, we have to consider to follow the successful examples of other countries

Let's see Sweden's case.

after 1960s, the birth rate was dramatically decreased. so the government of Sweden have tried to encourage to have babies by give various merits.

No matter how much the parents earn, they can get the money for their child, about $150. if the number of children is high, they can be subsidized much money.

Child care leave and benefits
If their children have health problems, they can get 60-days paid vacations.

maternity leave

Parents can get 480-days maternity leave. Surprisingly, more than 60-days maternity leave is necessary to father.  Sweden thinks that both parents have to take care of their child. Actually, in Korea, father's maternity leave is unusual thing. so my brother-in-law moved to European company in order to get maternity leave. Because, in Korea, European company provide paid- maternity leave for father.

paid-all day leave : 12 months / unpaid-all day leave : 30 months
unpaid-half day leave : 8 years
It is surprising thing to me. I can't imagine that I can leave 30 months' all day leave and 8 years' half day leave!
Most korean have trouble to assert their right to get child-care leave because of not upsetting their boss.

It is so amazing policies.

Germany has also rising birth rate. Germany especially focus on the education support

And France has high birth rate.

Someday, maybe within 10 years, I will marry with someone and have a baby. At that time, I expect to improve a lot of helpful policy for me. I hope Korean government try their best to enhance the birth encouraging policy.

So, this is the end of my posting.

Is it enough to understand the birth encouraging policy of Korea and other countries?

If you have any questions, please don't mind to ask me!

You should “specifically" write "in your blog" about (1) what topic you’re interested in, (2) what’s your motivation of it, and (3) what plan you have to learn for that. And see if you can find one topic from our course schedule closely related to your topic/motivation.
When you email us, also tell us (1) your name, (2) your student ID number, and (3) what section number (Section 1--10:30-11:45 / Section 2--2:30-3:45).
Thanks,
Professor Sung
1) what topic you’re interested in

Korean drama & Korean variety show

(2) what’s your motivation of it

I want to show what korean  like the story of the drama, and emotion of the people who live their life in korea. Because  drama is the reflection of our life, I think it is the best way to show korean life style and emotion.

These days korean variety show is showing the korean life style. Especially 'Samsiseggi'(three meals a day) is showing the korean dining table in farming village and farming village. And it can also show the way to harvest or fishing in korean region.

So I think these are the effective ways  to show korean culture and society.

(3) what plan you have to learn for that. And see if you can find one topic from our course schedule closely related to your topic/motivation.

I focus on finding more korean thing and the korean styled beauty from these. So introducing historical drama, i learn more about the background of this drama or inside story relative this. From this, i can learn more about the korean history and the emotion of our ancestors.

And i think my topic/motivation is closely related to the korean food (week 5), Korean mother (week 6) ('thank you, my son', the drama) and culture industry (week 13).
